Macaroni Kid Back to School: Tips For Getting Ready for School

By Dawn Betke, Riverhead Macaroni Kid, Mom Publisher, www.riverhead.macaronikid.com August 23, 2016
Whether or not your preparing for the fist day of preschool, Kindergarten, or just heading back to school, it can be a stressful process for both you and your child. Here is a list we've compiled to help ease the transition, for the entire family!

1. Read books about going to school, saying goodbye, and Mommy or Daddy coming back!  Check out a list HERE. Reading with your child has many benefits but can also prepare them for school by encouraging them to sit in one place for 10-15 min.

2. Go shopping for a new backpack and lunchbox together.  Write your child's name on it together as well.

3. Share stories about going to school with your child.  Maybe an older sibling has some fun stories, or Mom and Dad can chime in with memories from their school years.

4. Bedtime routine.  Sleep is very important to the young child, establish an early bedtime routine weeks before school starts, and stick to it!

5. Organize! Planning meals ahead, getting clothes ready for the week and laying out the weeks schedule can keep chaos down in the mornings.

6. Get a good Breakfast in! Plan ahead, have a few options ready to go!

7. Have a play date with a classmate.  If you can setup a play date prior to the start of school, that may make the transition much more easier for your child to already have a friend to look forward to seeing!

8. Visit the school if possible ahead of time, meet the teacher as well.

9. Make the day special.  Have a fun snack waiting for after school, or make their favorite dinner that night.

10.  Talk! Most important in my book.  Listen to what your child is telling you.  Are they excited? Afraid? Anxious?  Acknowledging their feelings and keeping your responses positive can make all the difference.
