  It’s turtle season!

The eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) has a long history dating back millions of years. These fascinating creatures are native to the eastern United States and have evolved to become well-adapted to their environment. With their distinctive domed shell and colorful markings, eastern box turtles have captured the interest of nature enthusiasts and researchers for centuries. Their ability to live for decades and unique behaviors make them a subject of fascination and study, contributing to our understanding of the natural world.

One of the most fascinating turtles you’ll encounter is the eastern box turtle. Their vibrant shell, adorned with yellow and orange streaks and blotches, spans from 4 ½ to 6 inches in length. The rest of their body can also display vivid markings. These turtles are equipped with a distinctive, sharp, horned beak.

Perhaps the coolest feature of the eastern box turtle is the hinged door on their shell that allows them to box themselves in (get it… box turtle, the box itself in?) for protection against predators. Disturbed or frightened, they pull their head and legs in and tightly close the shell. The shell is almost impossible to pry open when closed.

When you come across an eastern box turtle, it's crucial to give it the space it needs. Even if it’s attempting to cross a road, the best course of action is to act as a guardian, allowing it to navigate on its own. Remember, it's not advisable to handle it by the tail if you need to move it. Always ensure to relocate it in the same direction it was heading.
