A total solar eclipse
On April 8th, 2024, an amazing astronomical event will occur - a total solar eclipse. This eclipse will be visible from a narrow path that will cross the United States from Texas to Maine and be seen by millions of people.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out the Sun's light and casting a shadow on the Earth. The sky will darken during the eclipse, and the temperature will drop. Animals may act strangely, and birds may stop singing.
The path of totality, where the eclipse will be total, will be about 70 miles wide and pass through several major cities, including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Buffalo. Outside of the path of totality, people will still be able to see a partial eclipse, but the experience will not be as dramatic.
It is important to note that looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can cause permanent eye damage. To protect your eyes, you should wear special eclipse glasses or filters.
If you are lucky enough to be in the path of totality on April 8th, 2024, you are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Be sure to plan, as accommodations and travel will likely be in high demand. And don't forget your eclipse glasses!
