Seed Swapping -What is it and Why do people do it?
Seed swapping is a practice where gardeners or seed enthusiasts exchange seeds with each other. It is a great way to expand your garden and access new varieties that may not be available in stores. Gardeners can diversify their crops by swapping seeds and trying new plant varieties. Additionally, seed swapping helps to preserve heirloom seeds that may not be widely available and prevents the loss of genetic diversity in our food system. Overall, seed swapping is a fun and sustainable way to grow your garden and connect with other like-minded gardeners.
Seeds are classified into two primary categories: heirloom and hybrid. Hybrid seeds are crossbred to produce plants that are often more disease-resistant or yield higher. On the other hand, heirloom seeds are open-pollinated and passed down from generation to generation. These seeds are often valued for their unique flavor and appearance and tend to be more genetically diverse than hybrid seeds.
Gardeners who prefer heirloom seeds can save the seeds from their plants and replant them the following year. This is not always possible with hybrid seeds, as they often produce plants with different characteristics than their parents.
So, at the end of the day, seed swapping is a great way to diversify your crops and get access to new seed varieties. While both heirloom and hybrid seeds have their advantages and disadvantages, many gardeners prefer heirloom seeds for their unique qualities and the ability to save and replant the seeds.
Make sure to visit Suffolk County Farm this weekend. They are hosting a seed and plant swap this year. Please bring some propagations, unwanted houseplants, or seeds and seedlings. THIS IS AN "ALL-OUT EVENT," so anything that isn't traded or taken you must bring home at the end of the day. Please pre-register and get a $5 donation or a non-perishable food item to be collected at the door.
This event occurs on Saturday, March 9th, from 10AM-12PM.
